'Plain Language as Poetry’ Writing workshop

'Plain Language as Poetry’ is a workshop facilitated by Loraine Furter and Florence Cheval, in the context of the research project ‘support sCRIPtures’. It is a space for D/disabled and chronically ill community to slow down and slither together. In this workshop, we will aim to shift our attention towards a specific form of writing: plain language.

Plain language is writing that is easy to read and understand. Plain language makes content more accessible to everyone. “Plain language is an attempt to help more people understand ideas that matter,” Sara Luterman wrote, in the introduction to the plain language translation of ‘Disability Visibility’ by Alice Wong.

First, we want to approach plain language creatively: the more people find plain language interesting to use, the more it will circulate and therefore spread ideas and artworks in an accessible way. Second, we want to encourage disabled people to make their own way of using plain language, to seize this language practice, in order to make disability culture, arts and activism accessible for more people.
