-cide series: Ecocide

Het Vlaams Architectuurinstituut (VAi) en kunstencentrum Het Bos organiseren drie avonden over de relatie tussen genocide en gebouwde, natuurlijke en sociale omgevingen. We onderzoeken hoe en waarom genocidaal geweld zich niet alleen richt op mensenlevens, maar ook op hun thuis, hun steden en het landschap.
Tijdens de -cide series gespreksavonden gaan we gedurende een maand samen met moderator Janno Martens in dialoog met vijf gasten, eten we samen en bekijken we videowerk van internationale kunstenaars.

Ecocide

Tijdens de eerste avond reflecteren Amal Sarsour (United Nations University) en Lucia Rebolino (Forensic Architecture) over ecocide: de vernietiging van voedsel- en landschapsecologie – en hoe die te overleven.

De eerste avond van de -cide series is gericht op ecocide. Amal Sarsour, associate research fellow aan de UN University, legt uit hoe water wordt ingezet als wapen in de Gazastrook. Na Amal presenteert Lucia Rebolino van het Londense bureau Forensic Architecture (FA) een deel van het uitgebreide onderzoek naar Palestina dat FA de afgelopen tien jaar verrichte.

Aan de hand van Lucia’s notie van een ‘environmental continuum’ zullen we vervolgens in een open gesprek tussen Lucia, Amal en het publiek de relatie tussen genocide en omgeving proberen beter te begrijpen.

Van 18:00u tot 20:00u serveert de Boskeuken gerechten van chef Nour, een Palestijnse vluchteling uit Libanon.

Lucia Rebolino

_{An artist, architect, and computational designer whose work weaves science and art into counter-cartography, data, and web-based aesthetics. She is a researcher with Forensic Architecture in London, where she uses remote sensing and cartographic analysis to investigate environmental violence and produce spatial evidence for human rights and environmental justice cases. Her work and writing on prediction models and climate science have been featured in e-flux and exhibited at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. Her practice also explores technology-driven performance, and she has lectured at cultural institutions including MoMA, MediaLab Matadero, and the Institute for Postnatural Studies, as well as at academic institutions such as Columbia University, the Royal College of Art, and ETH Zurich. luciarebolino.com}

Amal Sarsour

_{An environmental health specialist and associate research fellow at the United Nations University–CRIS. She holds a PhD in Environmental Management, a Master of Public Health, and a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science. With over fifteen years of experience, her work focuses on water security, WASH systems, climate-related health risks, and the environmental impacts of protracted violence in Gaza and the wider MENA region.
She has led extensive field-based and academic research on the degradation of water resources, the collapse of environmental infrastructure, and the ecological harm resulting from repeated military assaults on Gaza. Her work on transboundary water security, community resilience, and the weaponization of water examines how environmental systems are deliberately disrupted in ways that constitute ecological violence. Sarsour is a long-standing member of the WASH Cluster, Gaza–Palestine, and participates in international networks, including CliMigHealth (Ghent University) and CliMent (the international multidisciplinary network on climate change impacts on mental health in Europe). She has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and policy briefs on environmental health, climate impacts, and Gaza’s accelerating ecological collapse.}
