Residency time: 15 April - 13 May
Show time: 22 - 31 May during Vruchtbare Grond
We asked Wout and Hsiao-Hsi some questions:
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Wout: Chantal Akerman, Bas Jan Ader, Jazz Lambaux, Jean-Luc Godard.
Hsiao-Hsi: For now, maybe Tezuka Osamu, Marianna Simnett, 楊德昌.
How has your style changed over time?
Wout: I did my bachelor's degree in photography (professional bachelor), but I felt like something was missing. I decided to pursue a master's degree to explore how I would feel in that environment. At first, I felt different and insecure. They told me to forget everything I had learned in photography.
Hsiao-Hsi: My style represents me as a person very well. Even when I age, my style also ages. And I think aging isn’t a bad thing.
How do you collaborate with other artists?
Wout: I try to collaborate a lot. Mostly, I organize meetings with other people, and through talking to each other, we develop projects. I like to collaborate with visual artists, but also with philosophers and musicians.
Hsiao-Hsi: I try to be respectful, and understand the personality/ideas of the other artist while working together. I know how to adapt myself in different situations, and I am also a person that is willing to communicate. It’s interesting to see how different artists work and not knowing what the outcome can be. Most importantly is that it’s the best when artists can have fun when collaborating.
When is your favorite time of day to create?
Wout: I like to create in the morning and in the evening before I go to bed. I'm a morning person, so I’m usually happiest in the morning, and that’s when I create the most. During the evening and night, I also get a lot of ideas, and I start writing, recording, or filming.
Hsiao-Hsi: MIDNIGHT. Unlike Wout, I am for sure not a morning person. I am already grateful to wake up without tears and bad dreams, not to mention coming up with ideas. Before making art, I need to save myself first. I used to work at midnight a lot, but not anymore, my body will collapse if I do so. There are too many distractions in day/night time. I feel more concentrated and powerful at ‘midnight’, because it feels like you are the only one awake in this world while others are sleeping. And my favorite thing is the bird singing when the sun rises.
