Met Funeral Parade of Roses blies Toshio Matsumoto de Japanse New Wave op in het bruisende, hallucinante Shinjuku van de jaren zestig. In een van de vroegste, meest radicale queerfilms uit Oost-Azië mengt Matsumoto documentaire, avantgardistische montage en speelse metafictie tot een zinderend portret van de ‘gay boy’-subcultuur, waar labels als ‘drag’, ‘gay’ of ‘trans’ nog vloeibaar waren. Met een scherp oog voor de rafelranden van de samenleving toont Matsumoto niet alleen de glamour, maar ook de grimmige realiteit achter de schitterende gevels van Shinjuku’s nachtleven.

Deze losse adaptatie van de Griekse tragedie Oedipus Rex, volgt Eddie, een gender-nonconforme hostess die zich een weg probeert te banen door een stad die hen tegelijk viert en verstoot. Dit met een psychoseksuele ontwaking en vele liefdesrivaliteiten tot gevolg. Geen exotiserende blik, maar een uitnodiging om Eddie’s hoofd binnen te stappen. Daar maken we kennis met hun verlangens, trauma’s en gendereuforie. Met echo’s van Derek Jarman, maar tegelijk volledig uniek in zijn queer rebellie, is Funeral Parade of Roses een poëtische mokerslag die nog altijd tintelt en provoceert.

Deze vertoning maakt deel uit van BOSCINEMA: een eclectisch filmprogramma dat focust op verdieping en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. Terwijl de wereld brandt, bouwen De Cinema en Het Bos samen aan een solidaire film community. Deze zomer presenteren we vier openluchtvertoningen in misschien wel de gezelligste binnenkoer van Antwerpen: de BOStuin.

With Funeral Parade of Roses, Toshio Matsumoto ignited the Japanese New Wave. In one of the earliest, most radical queer films from East Asia, Matsumoto blends documentary, avant-garde montage, and playful metafiction into a thrilling portrait of the ‘gay boy’ subculture, where labels such as ‘drag’, ‘gay’, or ‘trans’ were still fluid. With his keen eye for the fringes of society, Matsumoto reveals not only the glamour but also the grim reality behind the glittering facades of Shinjuku’s nightlife.

This loose adaptation of the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex follows Eddie, a gender-nonconforming hostess, as they navigate a city that both celebrates and rejects them. This leads to a psychosexual awakening and numerous romantic rivalries. No exoticising gaze, but an invitation to step inside Eddie’s mind. There, we are introduced to her desires, traumas, and gender euphoria. With echoes of Derek Jarman, yet entirely unique in its queer rebellion, Funeral Parade of Roses is a poetic sledgehammer blow that still tingles and provokes.

This screening is part of BOSCINEMA: an eclectic film programme that focuses on reflection and social engagement. While the world is burning, we build a cinephile community rooted in solidarity. This summer, Het Bos and De Cinema present four open-air screenings in what is perhaps Antwerp’s cosiest courtyard: the BOStuin.
