A home for who?
Tijdens de drie weken in het Bos wil ze onderzoeken wie in de buurt rond Het Bos thuis is, een thuis heeft, zal hebben of heeft gehad. In de straten, in de huizen en cafés, langs binnen of buiten, op, tegen of naast de grens tussen privé en publiek. En zoeken, hoe de ruimtes meer of minder plekken van mensen kunnen zijn.

Alle makers zitten in hetzelfde schuitje als het aankomt op nieuwe richtingen te onderzoeken en te verkennen, met de obstakels en overwinningen vandien. We vragen onze zomerresidenten naar hun visie op enkele quotes uit het werk 'Truisms' van kunstenares Jenny Holzer en 'Rules for Students and Teachers' van John Cage en Sister Corita Kent.

TRUISMS

Monomania is a prerequisite of success

Smila: "This depends on what one sees as success of one’s doing. Focusing on a specific thing or point or idea comes along with a certain blindness for others, just as an openness to unexpected influx distracts as much from an original focus as it feeds you."

The most profound things are inexpressible

Smila: "Or do we recognise them as more profound because we cannot describe them ? They are beyond the horizon of our languages, and thus we presume arrogantly nearly, that they are more profound or meaningful than what we can grasp. words tend to be inadequate The words of your hands and of your eyes, the ones of the shadows wandering down the walls and of a melody wandering up and around the brick houses?"

RULES FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

Find a place you trust, and then try trusting it for a while.

Smila: "Maybe this was meant as an advice concerning (artistic) work, but maybe also the thought came from a place in memory for the living places, places in your life of orientation, that often shift, and maybe you need the constant change, but at the same time you crave some sort of continuity. So you trust a place for a while, and when it is worn out, you move on to find another one."

Nothing is a mistake. There's no win and no fail, there's only make.

Smila: "The idea of a mistake is anchored in a preliminary idea of where you want to be at the end of a process. Rather, you could see it as a search, a question in the beginning and then you search for answers and at some point you have some answers that explain something or don’t, and then you start searching for their form. First make the wine, then the bottle, and it won’t be too small or too round or too big. HINTS: Always be around. Come or go to everything. Always go to classes. Read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully, often. Save everything. It might come in handy later. Constant observation, being curious about everything, it’s often what lies at the base of the urgency in works. I like the dutch word a lot, nieuwsgierig, being avaricious after new things, the hunger for unknown air."

JENNY HOLZER ‘Truisms’ 1983
‘Truisms’ zijn een paar honderd uitspraken van politieke, sociale, filosofische of moralistische aard. Soms zijn het 'open deuren', soms geven zij stof tot nadenken. De uitspraken zijn niet de persoonlijke meningen van Holzer. Sommige uitspraken of opvattingen zijn tegenstrijdig, maar samen geven ze een afspiegeling van de werkelijkheid. Holzer zegt: "Ik dacht dat het geheel een redelijk betrouwbaar portret zou kunnen zijn van de manier waarop de dingen zijn in de wereld, omdat al deze tegenstrijdige meningen tegelijkertijd bestaan".

10 RULES FOR STUDENTS & TEACHERS
Componist John Cage gebruikte een lijst met tien regels voor studenten en leraars, die opgesteld waren door zeefdruk-kunstenars, docente en non Sister Corita Kent. Kent maakte de lijst als onderdeel van een project in een cursus die ze gaf in 1967-1968. Sommige van de regels van Kent’s lijst doen ook denken aan de ‘Oblique Strategies’ van muzikant Brian Eno en de schilder Peter Schmidt. Neem nu regel nummer zes, "Nothing is a mistake," die doet denken aan Oblique Strategy "Honor thy error as a hidden intention."
